Windows vista Error recovery

Windows vista home basic pre-installed. It's worked fine
for a couple of months.
Now when you switch on, you only get as far as the windows error recovery
screen. selecting the first option to 'launch startup repair' only gives a
blank screen for a split second, the other option to start windows normally
only reboots and brings you back to the same screen.
tried f5 and f8 F12 and tried all options like startup in safe mode, everything
comes back to windows error recovery page.
